Beautiful Joe, written by Michael O’Brien, is a play with music for
all ages based upon the classic 1894 novel by Canadian author and
activist, Margaret Marshall Saunders (1861-1947). The hero “Beautiful Joe” is a farm-dog who suffered cruel abuse at
the hands of his master, at last losing his ears and tail to this
man’s axe. The story follows Joe’s transformation after being
rescued by 16 year-old Laura. Joe learns that animals and people
need each other and that each creature plays an important part in
the world.
