About The Puppet

Meet The Phoenix Train

For years, SpringWorks Festival has welcomed spectacular giant puppets from around the world. Now, we're creating one of our own!

Inspired by Stratford's railway history, vibrant theatre community, and spirit of resilience, our giant puppet tells its story in two forms: a majestic steam engine and a soaring phoenix.

The Phoenix Train invites friends from near and far to witness part of Stratford’s origin story, from a small railway town to a vibrant theatre city. The work is a large-scale animated puppet presented in two distinct forms, reflecting the city’s journey from a hub for the Canadian railways to a world-class centre for creativity.

The first form, the Phoenix Train, is at rest — a sculptural, illuminated steam engine that feels both mechanical and alive.

As a soft light glows from within, the Phoenix Train reflects Stratford’s steam-powered locomotive history while introducing the idea of transformation through puppetry, creativity and the magic of imagination. Subtle internal illumination and light effects give the impression of animation and movement, suggesting that the engine is not static, but in a state of anticipation.

"We wish to honour the Anishinaabe, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Wendat, and the Neutral Nation who are the traditional custodians of the land upon which we stand and the waters that flow through it. It is our privilege to share this land, which has been the site of imagination since the beginning of human experience.

Hermione Presents ~ SpringWorks is located on land governed by both the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant of 1701 and the Huron Tract Treaty of 1827. We are mindful of broken covenants and the need for us to respectfully listen, to learn from our mutual history and to strive continuously for reconciliation at all levels.

The responsibility to nurture this land and protect the future falls to us all and in so doing, we actively honour the wisdom of those who came before us."
