A coming of age story with themes of: adolescence, race, class, bullying, and anxiety. Lara has been negotiating bullies for her whole career at Victoria Public School. She’s tried turning some bullies into friends with mixed success. She is white. Her friend Sean is African-Canadian being raised by his mother alone. He leads a gang of tough boys. Lara likes Sean even though he and his gang frighten her. An important bond develops between the two.
